Flow Week 5
“How you do anything is how you do everything.”
— Martha Beck
As we considered the concept of flow, perhaps you have still not figured out when you have this state of effortless engagement. You may be overthinking it or have become distracted in your life, as so many people are experiencing. Concentration becomes an issue and is demanding and labored. I interpret Beck’s quote that when we put effort into even a small facet of our daily life, we can learn to transfer that effort into the more important aspects.
Starting with that drop of water, the following can guide you to finding more flow in your life. Consider an activity that you find rewarding that you become immersed in, as this is the most likely to guide you to the flow state. Examples could be cooking, gardening, hiking, running, swimming, gaming, yoga, painting, crafts, playing an instrument, surfing and reading. For some you may have to consider experiences that you formerly found enjoyable, thinking you no longer have the time for them. Give yourself the gift of time with this activity, at least 30 minutes, twice a week. Make this time sacred, by putting it into your calendar, no excuses to cut it out. Remember this time is productive time and is caring for your mind and body. It will also be helpful to consider when you are most focused during the day, for this project. The key is to stick with this gift to yourself, giving it a chance to become like water, flowing.
