Flow Week 1

“Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

Bruce Lee

Bruce Lee, martial artist and actor, developed his own technique blending kung fu, fencing, boxing and philosophy. He believed that we could self-adapt through practice, dedication and strengthening the mind. His quote about being like water sounds so simple, but is it?  This month of October we will focus on flow, taking it one drop at a time.

The first step to start the flow is to reject what is useless, another philosophy of Lee. Keep your mind on what you want and off what you do not. Try writing down what you want in your life. Then being mindful of all the daily distractions can help maintain the focus on what you want, from scrolling on your phone, to eating junk, to gossiping. Time wasters, that can lead to unhappiness and poor health. Also keep track of everything you do that brings what you want closer. Look at this list everyday this week, reviewing your wants and keeping them center stage in your mind.
