January 2024 - Week 2 Awakening “Do Hard Things”
As we move into the second week of January, we can start to develop a plan. Last week we looked back on what we had accomplished in 2023. This week we can consider one hard thing that we will work on now. It can be in any of the categories we divided our life into last week, physical, emotional, intellectual, or spiritual. Here is the reason we want to try this technique.
The anterior midcingular cortex in your brain grows bigger as we do things that we struggle with. Scientists are seeing this as not just the seat of willpower but the seat of the will to live. So, if you struggle with your weight and lose a few healthy pounds the anterior midcingular cortex grows. You gain it back, it shrinks. Another example is to fit 15 minutes of reading into your life. If you love to read, this is not the right choice! Think about what you do not like to do. Start there. Keep it simple, keep it small, find success.
